Tesla Wall Connector installation in Dallas requires a dedicated 240V circuit, typically a 60A circuit for full performance. The Wall Connector delivers up to 44 miles of range per hour, making it the fastest home charging option for Tesla owners.
Wall Connector Versus Universal Wall Connector
Tesla makes two current residential chargers:
Tesla Wall Connector (Gen 3). Designed for Tesla vehicles. Communicates directly with the vehicle over a proprietary protocol to optimize charging speed. Configurable from 15A to 48A depending on breaker size. Maximum rate is 48A on a 60A circuit.
Tesla Universal Wall Connector. Released in 2023. Adds a J1772 adapter and NACS port, making it compatible with non-Tesla EVs equipped with a NACS adapter. Same electrical requirements as the Gen 3 Wall Connector.
NACS and Adapter Compatibility
Tesla's NACS connector is becoming the industry standard. Ford, GM, Rivian, and other manufacturers are adopting NACS ports on new models. If your non-Tesla EV has a NACS port, it can use the Tesla Wall Connector directly. If it has a J1772 port, the Universal Wall Connector includes a J1772 adapter.
Mobile Connector Limitations
The Tesla Mobile Connector included with new Tesla vehicles uses a standard 120V or 240V outlet. On 120V it adds about 3 miles per hour. On a NEMA 14-50 240V outlet it adds up to 30 miles per hour. The Mobile Connector is a useful travel backup, not a substitute for a fixed Wall Connector installation.
Circuit Requirements
The Wall Connector runs at up to 48A continuous. NEC 210.20(A) requires a continuous load circuit to be sized at 125 percent of the continuous draw, so a 48A charger requires a 60A breaker. A licensed electrician confirms your panel has an available 60A slot and that the service can support the additional load.
